Happy seventh anniversary

Before the Mast!

Welcome

Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?

Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.

We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Temporary Theme Songs And Dedications, - in character only -

Some of the characters have in their signatures quotes from somewhere. Some of them have a main theme song, instrumental or with lyrics too. And each character might have, at a certain moment, another song reflecting better a certain mood/ state of spirit... so this is why I said "temporary" here.

Besides, each character might find, at a certain moment, an appropriate song to dedicate to a lover, friend or enemy from a thread...

Here is the place for all these songs, which might belong to any time and musical genre!

I'll start with the two theme songs our board has -all the others won't be reported from the 1719 board.

DEATH BEFORE THE MAST –by ALESTORM

"First light reflects off the ocean
All crew now set into motion
Another day like many before it
Hard life, no way to ignore it
Behold! A cry from the crow's nest
A ship appears from the south west
The years below deck that bored me
All lead to what lies before me

Hear the terror - Fires burn and cannons sound
Fate awaits me - As the vessels circle round
See the slaughter - Cutlass swings and pistols fire
Feel the anger - Raging through my body tires
One last battle - In this sailor's lonely war
Come to meet this - Destiny I can't ignore
I hold my breath - Close my eyes and hang on for
Death before the mast

Too late to lay low or outrun
Up close we're outmanned and outgunned
Prepare to rush forth, unleash hell
Cross swords in one final farewell
Hulls crash, our vessel is boarded
No mercy or tact is afforded
But now the King's men draw closer
Seems like it may all be over

Hear the terror - Fires burn and cannons sound
Fate awaits me - As the vessels circle round
See the slaughter - Cutlass swings and pistols fire
Feel the anger - Raging through my body tires
One last battle - In this sailor's lonely war
Come to meet this - Destiny I can't ignore
I hold my breath - Close my eyes and hang on for
Death before the mast."

TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST - by ASTRONAUTALIS

Chorus:
Two years spent before the mast
And no one knows the secrets that we're hiding
If word got loose, you'd face the lash
And thirteen loops would hold me fast and silent
Things are not always as they seem to be outside us
Devil got poor Persephone
But they can't take
They can't take you from me

I. Mr. Jones done made a mistake, it's all business
Worse thing than the watery grave with poor rictus
I found about a barrel of grain in the hold, listless
So hollow, half out of dismay, frayed princess
I guess I've gone soft on my age, they call it instinct
The rebels get the devil to pay her, the cat hissing
Gonna start, I know I oughta send her to the brig
But strongest, not scared, still water and calm winds
And all things aren't what they seem to be and
Small walls separating Earth from Eden
One rib did give Eve a meaning
And one snip might could keep her secret
With the short hair there and a change of clothing
Fit right in and work soak and oakum
Four fortnights shut alone with the opium
I might slip by, but for her and bossun.

II. Snip of the shears, a fist of her hair,
I'll take to the air - handsomely.
Until it floated down among the clouds
reflected on the glassy sea.
And when the winds disappeared,
crew stripped almost bare, bathed in the transfixed deep.
And all things aren't what they seem to be,
as she floated next to me - just out of reach.

III. There is no knot so steadfast it won't go broke,
in the middle of monsoons you hope don't choke.
Waiting watching her wet lips and clothes soak through
Blinded mind of the red sky and oxide clouds
living just as a fezz mittens the lines and
Booms coupled up with abstainments of stolen looks,
broke a pledge against the baulkhead world pitch pool,
'til you shake the soft hands in the soapstone pool.

IV. Mr. Jones is the poor soul who walked into a tempest
endless time to pull through.
Victim of whipping and headsail thoughts footloose,
The best men can end when the storm blows through.
So we paid our keep for the sin of a reckless dream
In the seam where secrets sleep
Between me, her, the Devil and the deep blue sea.

To Belle from Michaela
(OOC: change "flowers" to "elixirs" and this is the inn. wink.gif )

Sister Fatima by Don McLean

The spirit of Fatima still rules the Earth
She knows your future, she knows what it's worth
Sister Fatima has God-given powers
And on 42nd Street a shop that sells flowers
Is her palace, come and be healed

She knows all your business, your health and your ills
She'll counsel your weddings, divorces and wills
For full restoration five dollars an hour
And with each consultation a free holy flower
And if she likes you, well you can have two

And I came from nowhere like you and your friend
My searching and wandering went on without end
My future was dim, my spirit was crushed
In one sacred moment my questions were hushed

I'm a servant of fate in this garden of truth
A humble recruit of the taffeta booth
Where all things are known but few are revealed
Where sins are forgotten and sickness is healed
For five dollars the flower is free

I put this already in the 1719 site, but I decided that it should be here as well. smile.gif

I think this suits to Pieter's past really well. He was once a soldier who served in a bloody and bitter war and he had lost a ship in a battle. He is far from home. He hides his shame and guilt often, even from himself and thinks that his is nearly perfect... This all is related to his, sometimes, cynical attitude.

The snow might be seen as a metaphor

So:

Iron by Woodkid

Deep in the ocean, dead and cast away
Where innocence is burned in flames
A million mile from home, I'm walking ahead
I'm frozen to the bones, I am...

A soldier on my own, I don't know the way
I'm riding up the heights of shame
I'm waiting for the call, the hand on the chest
I'm ready for the fight and fate

The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head,
The thunder of the drums dictates
The rhythm of the falls the number of deaths
The rising of the heights ahead

From the dawn of time to the end of days
I will have to run away
I want to feel the pain and the bitter taste
Of the blood on my lips again

The steady burst of snow is burning my hands,
I'm frozen to the bones, I am
A million mile from home, I'm walking away
I can't remind your eyes, your face

Not that Aurore does this sort of thing, but if she did...this one is on her heart right now.

Hey, big man, come down from there
You know, with your hands,
What you can do from there
I know that you loved one long time ago
And what happened to you then
Made your heart turn to stone

And there’s a rain coming down
To the valley below
And I know just how they feel
Cause when the water rises
They start to look for high ground
Just like me when you come around

Hey, big man, big wind, don’t blow
Don’t come search for me
I beg of you both

'Cause there’s a rain coming down
To the valley below
And I know just how they feel
Cause when the water rises
They start to look for high ground
Just like me when you come around

All you have to do
Is think of me and you
And all these things
Enter my dreams
And warn, yes they warn me

That there’s a rain coming down
To the valley below
And I know just how they feel
Cause when the water rises
They start to look for high ground
Just like me when you come around

High Ground, Orenda Fink

This has been Rowan's general theme song since I started really playing him on the board. I think the mood of it fits him very well - and the lyrics, of course. The stanza in italics is what drew my attention, however - and illustrates Rowan's fear/expectation that he will die at sea, which is why he doesn't make many acquaintances aside from fellow sailors.

Follow along: Florence + The Machine, "What The Water Gave Me"

Time it took us
To where the water was
That’s what the water gave me
And time goes quicker
Between the two of us
Oh, my love, don’t forsake me
Take what the water gave me

Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones

Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

And oh, poor Atlas
The world’s a beast of a burden
You’ve been holding up a long time
And all this longing
And the ships are left to rust
That’s what the water gave us

So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

‘Cause they took your loved ones
But returned them in exchange for you
But would you have it any other way?
Would you have it any other way?
You couldn't have it any other way

‘Cause she’s a cruel mistress
And a bargain must be made
But oh, my love, don’t forget me
When I let the water take me

So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the over flow
Pockets full of stones

Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones

Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

My obsessions with certain songs come and go pretty quickly, but this one most certainly makes me think of Fintan.

The Fear by Ben Howard

Mama, cold hearted child, tell me how you feel
Just a blade in the grass, spoke unto the wheel
Mama, cold hearted child, tell me where it's all gone
All the luster of your bones, those arms that held you strong

I've been worryin' that my time is a little unclear
I've been worryin' that I'm losing the ones I hold dear
I've been worryin' that we all, live our lives, in the confines of fear

Mama, cold hearted child, tell me how you feel
Just a grain in the morning air, dark shadow on the hill
Mama, cold hearted child, tell me where it all falls
All this apathy you feel will make a fool of us all

I've been worryin' that my time is a little unclear
I've been worryin' that I'm losing the ones I hold dear
I've been worryin' that we all, live our lives, in the confines of fear

Oh I will become what I deserve
Oh I will become what I deserve
Oh I will become what I deserve
Oh I will become what I deserve

I've been worryin', I've been worryin',
I will become what I deserve
I've been worryin',
My time is a little unclear
I will become what I deserve

I've been worryin', I've been worryin'
That my time is a little unclear
I've been worryin', I've been worryin'
That I'm losing the ones I hold dear
I've been worryin', I've been worryin'
That we all, live our lives, in the confines of fear

Most Ben Howard songs make me think of him, but I'm stuck on this one for right now.

This song resonates with Niamh and her emotional feelings towards Fletcher.

"Asleep At Last" --
The Wailin Jennys

Be my asleep at last
Kiss me slow and hold me fast
Be my sail and be my mast
In the blue forever cast
your love
Far from pain and past
Be my this one’s meant to last

Be my I want nothing more
Pull the blinds and lock the door
Be my calm after the storm
In the winter wind my warm
Be my anchor be my moor
Pull my heart onto your shore

And I could be the one to make you see that you could be the one for me
If you could be the one to tell me true that I could be the one for you

Be my uncovering
Every colour opening
Be my gills and be my wings
I’ll be queen to your king
And I will show you everything
A vow that doesn’t need a ring

And I could be the one to make you see that love is all we’ll ever need
If you could be the one to see it through see that I’m the one for you

I think we all know who this is for. <3

~Hopeless Wanderer by Mumford & Sons

You heard my voice I came out of the woods by choice
Shelter also gave their shade
But in the dark I have no name

So leave that click in my head
And I will remember the words that you said
Left a clouded mind and a heavy heart
But I was sure we could see a new start

So when your hope's on fire
But you know your desire
Don't hold a glass over the flame
Don't let your heart grow cold
I will call you by name
I will share your road

But hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
And hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer

I wrestled long with my youth
We tried so hard to live in the truth
But do not tell me all is fine
When I lose my head, I lose my spine

So leave that click in my head
And I won't remember the words that you said
You brought me out from the cold
Now, how I long, how I long to grow old

So when your hope's on fire
But you know your desire
Don't hold a glass over the flame
Don't let your heart grow cold
I will call you by name
I will share your road

But hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
And hold me fast, Hold me fast
'Cause I'm a hopeless wanderer
I will learn, I will learn to love the skies I'm under
I will learn, I will learn to love the skies I'm under
The skies I'm under

I've always liked this song, but didn't realize until recently that it perfectly articulates how Addie feels about Nicole (or will, soon).

Gentle On My Mind

It's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowing I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that are dried upon some line
That keeps you in the backroads
By the rivers of my memory
That keeps you ever gentle on my mind

It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that bind me
Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walking
It's just knowing that the world will not be cursing
Or forgiving when I walk along some railroad track and find
That you're moving on the backroads
By the rivers of my memory
And for hours you're just gentle on my mind

Though the wheat fields and the clothes lines
And the junkyards and the highways come between us
And some other woman's cryin' to her mother
'Cause she turned and I was gone
I still might run in silence tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me 'til I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you walkin' on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind

I dip my cup of soup back from a gurglin'
Cracklin' caldron in some train yard
My beard a rustling, cold towel, and
A dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands 'round the tin can
I pretend to hold you to my breast and find
That you're waiting from the backroads
By the rivers of my memories
Ever smilin' ever gentle on my mind

For Julia and Will

Theme from Love Story

Where do I begin
To tell the story of how great a love can be?
The sweet love story that is older than the sea
The simple truth about the love she brings to me
Where do I start?

With her first hello
She gave a meaning to this empty world of mine
Thered never be another love, another time
She came into my life and made the living fine
She fills my heart

She fills my heart with very special things
With angels songs, with wild imaginings
She fills my soul with so much love
That anywhere I go, Im never lonely
With her along, who could be lonely?
I reach for her hand, its always there

How long does it last?
Can love be measured by the hours in a day?
I have no answers now, but this much I can say
I know Ill need her 'till the stars all burn away
And shell be there, shell be there

This song is dedicated to Adoracion from Niamh.

Not Your Cinderella

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

You walk in the room and all the girls talk
I guess you get used to most of them
Falling down at your feet

'Cause you got the charm and the definite down
So tall and dark like you just came out
Of some kinda fairytale dream

Oh, oh
Baby, you're something
Oh, oh

But I'm not your Cinderella
You're not the one in a million fellas
Slipper ain't gonna fit me
Give my regards to Mr. Disney

Oh, I'm no Sleeping Beauty
One kiss alone won't do it to me
Hate to be the one to tell ya
Oh, but I'm not your Cinderella

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

I don't know if I believe in love at first sight
I think I might need just a little more time
To grow and be real

So keep up the laughter and rambling on
At the stroke of midnight, it's gonna be gone
'Cause this ain't no heart you can steal

Oh, oh
Baby, you're something
Oh, oh

But I'm not your Cinderella
You're not the one in a million fellas
Slipper ain't gonna fit me
Give my regards to Mr. Disney

Oh, I'm no Sleeping Beauty
One kiss alone won't do it to me
I hate to be the one to tell ya
Oh, but I'm not your Cinderella

Oh, oh
Baby, you're something
Oh, oh
Oh, I'm not your Cinderella
Oh, oh, oh

Oh, I'm not your Cinderella
You're not the one in a million fellas
Slipper ain't gonna fit me
Give my regards to Mr. Disney

Oh, I'm no Sleeping Beauty
One kiss alone won't do it to me
Hate to be the one to tell ya
Oh, that I'm not your Cinderella

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh

How Colin feels about a certain hot headed Irish woman

When She Says Baby by Jason Aldean

Some days it's tough just gettin' up
Throwin' on these boots and makin' that climb
Some days I'd rather be a no-show lay-low
Before I go outta my mind.

But when she says baby,
Oh no matter what comes ain't goin' nowhere she runs her fingers through my hair and saves me.
Yeah that look in her eyes got me comin' alive and drivin' me a good kinda crazy
When she says baby.
Oh when she says baby.

Some nights I come home fightin' mad
Feel like runnin' my fist through the wall.
Is it even worth it what I'm fightin' for anymore feelin'
Torn all the hell with it all.

But when she's says baby,
Oh no matter what comes ain't goin' nowhere she runs her fingers through my hair and saves me.
Yeah that look in her eyes got me comin' alive and drivin' me a good kinda crazy
When she says baby

Everything gonna be alright.
Just lay down by my side.
Let me love you through this life.

Yeah she's the perfect shot of faith.
When every bit of mine is gone.
Somethin' I can believe in a best friend
A heaven sent love to lean on.

But when she says baby,
Oh no matter what comes ain't goin' nowhere she runs her fingers through my hair and saves me.
Yeah that look in her eyes got me comin' alive and drivin' me a good kinda crazy
When she says baby.
Oh when she says baby.
Yeah that look in her eyes got me comin' alive and drivin' me a good kinda crazy.

For Raoul <3 Lucia

The Prayer- Georges Brassens

For the little boy who lays dying close to his mother
While children play on the flower bed
And for the wounded bird that doesn't know how
His wing became suddenly bloody and falls from the sky
For the thirst and the hunger and the feverous delirium
Hail, Mary

For the beaten children, for the drunk who returns home
For the ass who gets kicked in the stomach
And for the humiliation of the innocents who are punished
For the sold virgin that is undressed
For the son whose mother has been insulted
Hail, Mary

For the old woman who stumbles under too much weight
Exclaiming "My God!", for the unfortunate ones whose arms
Couldn't rely on a human love
Like Simon of Cyrene bearing the Cross of the Son
For the fallen horse under the chariot that it drags
Hail, Mary

For the four horizons that crucify the world
For all those whose flesh is torn or dies
For all those who are without feet, who are without hands
For the sick that are operated on and moan
And for the just put among the ranks of killers
Hail, Mary

For the mother learning that her son is healed
For the bird calling the fallen bird back to the nest
For the thirsty grass that gathers rain
For the lost kiss returned by love
And for the beggar who finds his money again
Hail, Mary

For Sebastien, this fits him so well right now.

Iridescent - Linkin Park

You were standing in the wake of devastation
You were waiting on the edge of the unknown
With the cataclysm raining down, insides crying save me now
You were there, impossibly alone

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation
You build up hope, but failure's all you've known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go, let it go.

And in a burst of light that blinded every angel
As if the sky had blown the heavens into stars
You felt the gravity of tempered grace,
Falling into empty space
No one there to catch you in their arms

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation
You build up hope, but failure's all you've known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go, let it go

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation
You build up hope, but failure's all you've known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go, let it go

Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation
You build up hope, but failure's all you've known
Remember all the sadness and frustration
And let it go, let it go

How Leftheris feels after the Court Martial - "Apopse thelo na pio" by Haris Alexiou

I want to drink tonight
so as nothing to remember
I want to trap myself in smoke
and fear no consequences

I want to drink tonight
and surpass my limits
I want to confess my lost dreams
covered in smoke's veil

I'll light up with cigarettes and burn out with liquor
Now that I've taken fright
may everything turn into ashes

I want to drink tonight
erase everything and everyone
I want to disappear in smoke
and look back never again
