Join the most epic naval battle!

Make your mark upon our West Indies saga in "Doomsday"!

Welcome

Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?

Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.

We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Well, you are another year older and you haven't changed a bit.
That's great because you are perfect just the way you are.
For our favourite seafarer, the warmest wishes for your birthday, brought by a messenger
and accompanied by one of Maribel's cakes:

The note she brought you says:

May your birthday and every day be filled with the warmth of sunshine,
the happiness of smiles, a heavy rain of success, the sounds of laughter,
the feeling of love and the sharing of good cheer.

Not being able to focus to write. Headache from synusitis, and a general depressive mood. Having to run next week with my mother to the doctors doesn't help either.

Sorry, I'll be back with lots of muse! I know I owe several posts in the celebration thread (but there are a few characters who could join before me too).

JUNE

“Before the Mast” is approaching its seventh year of life – what's two more months to pass? To many more together! Warm thanks to all the crew, to everybody who has made it possible for our writing community to flourish and for the story to get further.

Unlike other years, we won't have any additional special birthday event, since the one of last year, Saint John's summer fires, is still ongoing. We have the birthday celebration here in Tortuga, and it is exciting, as long as people do really join and take part in it with all their hearts, because it has pirates and Navy men joined together, happy for their friends and loved ones.

You are invited to join our next volume, Caribbean Dawn, and bring there the characters you want to survive the Doomsday (and all the land-based characters you want to keep). The only effort required from you is to make sure you update the character bios not only in form, but also in contents with everything which had happened in 1720 Before the Mast.

The circumstances of the move have been discussed here as extensively as you wished. The discussion is still open for all of you to mention any concerns, suggestions or comments regarding the new volume, the new possible plots, the ways to strengthen our community and anything else related to our story and community. The floor is yours!

As per the 1-st of June 2017, statistics show that we have 37 male active characters and 24 female. For the purpose of the statistics, only the writers who have posted in May are counted here. However, if they have posted only with one character out of several they have, all their characters are counted as active.)

Active members: 12
Active characters: 61, out of which:

Pirates = 12
English Navy = 5
French Navy = 11
Privateers = 5
Civilians = 28

There are plenty of new things “Before the Mast”, looking forward to your participation, as they give opportunities for more characters than they actually seem to join. There are new and already ongoing threads which would welcome your participation. There is a big battle, which has also been opened for the pirates, the French and British Navy too, as shown here. It will end apotheotically the month of July 1720, making way for a Caribbean Dawn bright for the survivors.

I would also want to highlight the Whale of a tale section, where there are lots of interesting stories to read when you are waiting for your partners’ replies, as well as the Message in a bottle, where some journals start to contour!

A warm welcome to Blades's initiative to bring a British Navy sailor to our story, Thomas Hightower. Looking forward to seeing his first post, and seeing him integrated into the story!

As for thread/ quote spotlight, the French Navy carpenter Marc Lafont, played by Joelle, deserves highlighted for the the most congeniall quote from the thread Doomsday:

It's always easy to blame someone who isn't you, though. Even if you would have done exactly what they are doing. The pirates aren't us, so we blame them. And when they are all dead, we will find somebody else to shift the blame to.

The deeply human thought, well written, reflects a peaceful and congenial soul. Congratulations and way to go!

The “Histories and Chronicles of the West Indies” are the whole site’s, not anybody’s monopoly, and I really appreciate when people get involved and show that we are a community! Taking part in the community, giving feedback, talking about your characters is also important, and spending a few idle moments on a game while waiting for an answer is never a bad idea.

There are plenty of new things “Before the Mast”, looking forward to your participation, as they give opportunities for more characters than they actually seem to join. There are new and already ongoing threads which would welcome your participation. We are now in the process of exchanging prisoners between the French Navy and the pirates. There is also a big battle, which has also been opened for the pirates, the French and British Navy too, as shown here. It will end apotheotically the month of July 1720, making way for a Caribbean Dawn bright for the survivors.

As for thread/ quote spotlight, the pirate first mate Anani Fireflint/ Cacica, played by Alecto, deserves highlighted for the the most suspenseful quote from the thread Doomsday:

" They were in no shape to fight, especially not the Rising Sun’s crew. They had just witnessed the loss of their ship, their home. If their rage would drive them, so too would their despair. It was a cornucopia of negative feelings, and when one went into a fight with that it made one so much more satisfied with receiving a sword through the gut, ending it all. It was no way to fight and no way to die.

Yet Sol and Johnson were right: they could not avoid this battle, and like hell would Anani allow herself to fall into the hands of any Navy again. The newly arrived British ship was bearing down on them and the wind showed them little favor. It all felt rather like an omen, the way things had all played out. What a terrible way the Rising Sun had died—under a false flag with a false name, with a false captain and crew. It felt like a punishment, or a scolding. "

It is most beautifully written, reflecting well the spirit of the pirates' ingrate situation. Congratulations!

You know also that we need fresh blood of the history-loving, writing and dedicated kind… I am making an appeal to all of you to bring other friends of yours who are into writing swashbuckling adventures, because the word of mouth is the most powerful way of advertising. In addition to this, the ones who have blogs, MySpace, LiveJournal or InsaneJournal accounts, please advertise “Before the Mast” and try to bring new members. Those who have Facebook accounts – please “Like” our page and spread the word! Those with Twitter and Tumblr, follow us and retweet/ reblog some of our messages! We have the site’s Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and Deviant Art group links in the sidebar, just a click away – but how successful can they be if even some of the members ignore them?

As for thread/ quote spotlight, the former pirate Sabelline Durand, played by Sabe, deserves highlighted for the most suspenseful quote from the thread Over you:

"Prison has no escape from your thoughts. There is no leaving that cell, no work to lose yourself in. What I would have given many nights for exhaustion so I didn't have to dream. That's the real torture. Moments stretch into eternities with nothing but...visits from the guards to break the long stretches of nothingness."

It is well written, reflecting well the spirit of a character who had spent three years in prison and catching the whole essence of the ordeal. Congratulations!
