Happy seventh anniversary

Before the Mast!

Welcome

Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?

Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.

We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Date: 24-th of June 1720
Place: Basse Terre, Tortuga, in the inn "Elixir d'Armagnac"

- Continued from here -

It was mid-morning when the ship left them in Tortuga. They had succeeded to sleep for most of the voyage, nestled in each other’s arms, somewhere on the deck, as it was better than in the cramped space below. They didn’t look too tired when they set foot on the cobble streets of Basse Terre. Leftheris was as presentable as any warrant officer on shore leave could have been, and he was too biased to see Mora as anything else than the beauty he had been taken with.

He had expected, childishly, that a nest of sin and debauchery should look the part, flashing its decadence to the "innocent" visitors, but he found a town much like others - obviously smaller than Port de Paix, but not unlike some little towns on the shores of the Mediterranean in France or Spain.

The same combustible heap of contiguous houses which, in case of a severe thunderstorm or another fire-related accident could lead to whole neighbourhoods burning, were lined like beads on the string of winding roads. Only rarely squares, fountains and a church interrupted the necklace. The mix of architectural styles could be noticed even by people like him, who weren't knowledgeable in the field. But, one thing after the other, the town had its appeal.

The fact that it was a pirate stronghold wasn't shown openly at this hour of the morning. Maybe the night life would show it differently, he mused. He was curious to meet Mora's sister, as he had heard about her from Mora and from the children. And he was decided to ask her about the two pirates he knew - Andrea and Gaspard.

Mora had enjoyed this trip more than she had expected to. Maybe all the unusual emotions she had experienced during Saint John's festival and the feeling of a queen's power determined by Thierry's willingness to follow her to Tortuga unconditionally had contributed to it. Also, the wind had been gentle with those unaccustomed with a life on the waves.

She had visited Maribel in February, and she was convinced she'd remember how to go there. Since then, Maribel was the one who had visited her twice or three times. Now it was time to return her visit. As far as she remembered, Maribel's man wasn't named Juan either, so today shouldn't be more than a feast she had organised for others, the younger sister thought, oblivious of the surprise awaiting everybody today.

Basse Terre was half-alive this morning. There were people still sleeping and others who could be in church, at the morning mass. Mora knew Maribel enough to suspect she would be the one to be found in the church. Others had reluctantly opened their shops, knowing that there would be customers today.

They were heading to the inn. She noticed with amusement Thierry's expression when taking in the view, wondering what he had actually expected.

- Continued from here and here -

Maribel's first thought when she woke up, after a few hours of sleep, was not that she was now a married woman. Right now, in her mind, nothing had changed. She needed time to process the overwhelming new reality, and this time for herself would come later. Maybe while getting dressed for the party. Maybe when announcing to the others that she was Mrs. Saint John now...

But as quickly as she put some things on, leaving Cass to sleep half an hour more, she went to see Mini, to bring her some thick broth to eat and to ascertain how she was faring. Both childbed fever and heavy bleeding could happen to new mothers, very often with deadly effects. In some cases she had heard about, the women were taken care of, even by doctors, and they still couldn't be saved.

She wanted to fight for Mini's life - not as much for her sake, given how rude and inconsiderate she had been, but for the innocent baby's, the one who depended on her and she hadn't wanted even to nurse him, thinking sleep was more precious than the new life she had just brought forth. Any baby deserved a healthy mother, and Maribel considered her role was to take care of Mini, so that the new mother could take care of her baby.

The still nameless baby boy was now with Juliette and her seven weeks old daughter, Marie-Jeanne Henriette, named after the two attendants they had at the wedding and after Renaud's associate, who had taken him under his wing when arriving to Tortuga, at Maribel's recommendation. Maribel and Henri Soufflet had been chosen by Renaud and Juliette as the baby's godparents, and the ceremony took place less than one week ago.

Entering the room, with chicken broth on a plate, accompanied by some bread, Maribel said cheerily:

"Good morning! Are you hungry? I've brought you some chicken broth. How are you feeling?"

Waking up hadn’t helped much on Mini’s mood, nor on her tiredness. It seemed that the long birth had taken its toll and for the moment, Mini wanted just three things in her life: She wanted to rest to get back to full strength, she wanted to eat because she was hungry and she wanted to get back to sea and kill someone. Surely nothing could alleviate frustrations like taking a life. She was already awake when Maribel entered the room with food and Mini took it gladly. TO the question of how she was feeling, she looked at the woman for a bit and then answered: ‘A thousand pounds lighter,’ she said sarcastically and filled her mouth with chicken. ‘What do you want?

Maribel already knew not to expect any gratitude from Mini. The new mother's reply didn't surprise her, even if the question was rude.

"I want to know if you are still in heavy pains, if you are bleeding heavily or not, if you are feverish or not, in order to know how to help you," she said directly and honestly. "I want to know if you feel your milk heavy in your boobs, because you haven't breastfed your baby yet and it might cause you discomfort. By the way, if you want him just tell me and I'll bring him to you. A baby must be with his mother all the time, especially in the first days," she added with concern in her voice.

Indeed, she had heard that the noble women used to leave their babies with wet nurses and not breastfeed them, just because it would be inconvenient for their figure and for their pastimes, not allowing them to spend their time with parties and various social events. For those women, the nurse was the actual mother figure for their first years, until the task was taken over by a governess, and the actual mother was just someone visiting them for a little while. But Mini was not of the nobility kind, and the common women used to breastfeed and take care of their own children.

"He needs your fresh milk," she tried to explain Mini, "not the one a nurse who hadn't given birth recently can offer him. A mother is made so as she can give her baby exactly what he needs in order to grow healthy."

Of course, the growing healthy part was never guarranteed. A baby could die for various reasons in his first year of life. Her own mother, who had raised five children past infancy, had two more who had died in their first six months. But Mini seemed to need more explanations than other new mothers. Without knowing the other woman's story, Maribel wondered if it was so because Mini might have lost her own mother early in life.

As soon as Mini had inquired about Maribel’s motivation for being there, she regretted posing the question. It was hard to see why the Captain or any of the others wanted her company because once Maribel began speaking, she just would not shut up again. Endless streams of talk and talk and Mini could live without that. ‘I’ve been hurt worse!’ Mini replied, likening her condition with the only other thing she knew to cause bleeding: Battle damage. The came a surprising question from the innkeeper. That child that Mini had nearly forgotten about since yesterday was brought up in conversation and Mini shot Maribel a look and sighed. ‘If you are so concern for that… thing… Why don’t you take it to the doctor?!’ she sneered and turned away from the innkeeper.

In Mini’s mind, this meant that the conversation was over. She was not even looking at the other woman. But then Maribel began speaking again. More talk. Mini kept her back turned to the innkeeper, but she felt the tense mood arise in her. Her fists clenched and an annoyed expression swept across her face. ‘Where is Sol or Cass? Can’t you talk to one of them if sound absolutely must leave your mouth?! Why are you talking to me?!’ she growled and if she hadn’t been weakened from the birth, she might have physically assaulted Maribel.

If Mini dismissed any concern, saying that she had been hurt worse, then it meant she was all right. If she had childbed fever, she would have felt too sick to argue with her, Maribel mused. She didn't know very much about this, but she had seen one of her tavern maids dying together with her stillborn child, a couple of years ago.

A new mother calling her own baby a thing was, however, something Maribel got extremely angry about. And her lack of understanding angered her more:

"For God's sake, your son is healthy enough, for now, not to need a doctor. He needs constant care from his mother, and her milk as nourishment, several times a day, however, in order to remain healthy! How do you think your mother had behaved with you, so that you have survived and you are now here? Do you think she had casted you aside and called you an IT?"

She had difficulties restraining herself not to strangle that indifferent being when she suggested she should have talked to Cass or Sol.

"I am talking to YOU, because you are the baby's mother, not anyone else! And he needs you, not a doctor. It seems you need a constant reminder about this in order to woman up and take your motherly duties! Dios mio, if this beautiful baby was mine..."

She needed to take a deep breath, to calm down.

Pieter was happy, or some might say even joyful, this morning. He had noticed that this life on land had good sides too. He could spent time with Amanda and enjoy things ashore.

He still wanted back to sea, eventually, but life did not allow it for now. Today Pieter felt he might as well use this pace the possible "fate" had brought him well and enjoy life, or at least try harder.

The night before had been fun and Pieter barely had sleep. He still was not tired. He made his way to the inn.

Pieter arrived at the inn, smiling broadly. He greeted the people in the hall, without paying much attention if he was interrupting something "Good morning! Is the Romeo awake yet? Cass I mean? Or do I need to fetch him?"

The sound of Maribel’s voice was already grinding against Mini’s nerves and her patience was tested. Perhaps it was fortunate that the otherwise cold fighting woman was weakened, or she might have done something irreversible. But when Maribel claimed that the child was in no need of a doctor, Mini had had enough of this pestering. ‘If the child is not in need of a doctor then you bother me for no reason!’ she said without looking at the other woman. As usual with Maribel, nothing could be said in just a few words but required long speeches and Mini was sick of listening to her.

Without giving it much thought, she sat up and swung her legs out of the bed and got to her feet. She could feel the dizziness from her quick motion and staggered for a moment before finding her balance. Then she shot Maribel a look of caution and began walking towards the door. ‘I have had enough of your talking! I am finding somewhere else to spend my time until you exhausted your words on someone who actually care about what you have to say!’ With that, Mini left the room. Her usually tanned complexion quite pale as she walked towards the main room.

Maribel was in shock. Her mind couldn't understand Mini's lack of reaction and indifference, when the subject was her own baby.

She wasn't happy either with her disrespectful attitude, which the innkeeper wouldn't have accepted from anyone else. Mini was lucky that it was Sol's word which had brought her here, in the inn, otherwise at the second disrespectful reply (not the first, which would have received only a stern warning), she would have been thrown up into the streets. (Or at least so she was thinking now, deeply annoyed at the other woman. In truth, she would have never thrown out a pregnant woman who had nowhere to go, and she wouldn't have thrown out a new mother either. What if the milk she hadn't given to the baby had gone up to her mind?)

As she saw that Mini was actually leaving the room, she followed her, asking in despair:

"And what should I do with the baby?"

Dios mio, what a mother!

As she descended towards the main hall, still angry with Mini, she saw Pieter entering, and she heard his question. It was something to remind her about everything today was about. There were many reasons to rejoice. Still, the baby was a reason to worry. He couldn't remain for an eternity with Juliette and her daughter.

"I think you have to fetch him. And I'll be the one to bring you warm water there, in the boudoir."

Pieter had never been in her room, and he didn't know how it was arranged, that the adjacent boudoir had been converted into a bathroom of sorts, where Pieter had enough light to shave the groom.

Cass had woken up, ultimately. A sleepy head remembered through a mist the unexpected events of last night, and that today he had still important things to do.

He had to get dressed, then to go to church with Nardo and Chago to have the bridal wealth blessed, but also with the best man and bridesmaid for the marriage certificates. Damn, it was too complicated for someone barely awakened!

But first things, first. Getting dressed and... maybe downstairs there would be coffee.

Words could hardly describe the mixture of indifference and wild annoyance that Mini felt in this moment. Indifference towards this baby that Maribel seemed so utterly invested in, and annoyance in the sense that the inn-keepers voice was grinding against the former slave’s nerves. As Mini had enough and got up to leave, she had hoped to be left alone, but was disappointed to find Maribel following her and continuously pestering her about the child.

As Mini reached the door, Maribel asked, almost desperately, what she was supposed to do with the child and Mini stopped in the doorway and remained still for a moment. She took a deep breath because even as wild and unpredictable as she was known to be, Mini knew that her place on the Rising Sun would not be guaranteed if Sol’s favourite inn-keeper annoyed her to the point of violence. ‘Do whatever the fuck you want!’ Mini answered and glanced carelessly over her shoulder before getting back into motion. Mini had no idea what she wanted to do or where she was going, but anywhere but the inn for a while and anything else that Maribel’s nagging. She’d probably revert to her old self soon, but she knew that swinging a cutlass or sleeping with a man might not exactly be the thing for her in her current condition.

Mora and Thierry were ready to enter Maribel's inn when they saw a young woman storming out. Mora smirked, trying to guess what that was about, all the probabilities running through her mind being very far away from the reality of what had happened inside.

"Good morning!" she said, seeing her sister on the last steps, a little confused. "If you have some coffee of your special recipe ready, we are willing to try it," she added.

This was rather a novelty, since she usually preferred tea. But Maribel's recipe was different, indeed.

Then, as she saw Cass behind Maribel too, and a few other people she had met briefly during her few days stay with Maribel mid-February, she thought necessary to introduce Thierry too:

"He is Thierry Vounos. It is a long time I wanted to introduce him to you."

There was something going on in the inn, like always, but as it was not related to him, Pieter focused on his mission, which was assisting Cass.

He went to fetch for the groom. It seemed he had thought of morning coffee as Pieter met him at the stairs, "Oh, you are awake? Great... I think you need some coffee before we began. Let's say it looks like you need it," He smirked, to him the other man looked tired indeed.

He wondered if Cass would need some "mental" support besides aid with the tasks. He knew he could properly help only with the latter and only try the former.

Maribel had heard Mini's reply, and in this case, the annoyance and anger turned into joy.

"If I can do with him what the fuck I want, then I am going to raise him as my own!" she replied.

Most likely Mini had heard that, as it was shouted before closing the door behind her. She was warned. Maribel wouldn't let this chance pass. It meant the baby was Saint John's gift to her, exactly how she had prayed last night, just before becoming Cass's wife.

Cass! Of course, she was a married woman now, and she should have talked to Cass before saying those words. But even if they had been said in a moment of anger, impulsively, they weren't to be taken back. Just that it was not exactly the right moment for such a discussion, right before the party. She turned her head towards him only after seeing Pieter and hearing he was talking to Cass.

"Coffee! Of course, right away! Prisca heard, understood and went to the kitchen.

And then, the door opened again. Maribel had hoped to see Mini back… but no, the surprise was greater! As if her thoughts brought Antonia to her in time to be her bridesmaid, besides Amanda.

"Welcome! I am so glad to see you! Coffee will be coming for all of us," she said, looking curiously at the man accompanying Antonia.

Last time, in February, it was somebody from the Rising Sun. Now, could he be…? The moustache, the swarthy complexion, the age, were hinting towards a certain person Maribel suspected that Antonia was introducing to her. Antonia's next words confirmed she had been right.

"Glad to meet you, Monsieur Vounos," she replied in French, not sure how much Spanish the man understood. "My sister had been talking about you. I have to warn you beforehand that our special coffee has an unusual taste, being spiced in the manner of the Middle Eastern peoples."

The first encounter with Carmen had taught her to state this before letting someone tasting her coffee for the first time. But now she had to announce something else, and she said it louder, for everyone in the main hall to hear:

"You two are coming at the right moment. Last night the priest conducted a wedding for several couples next to the fires. Cass and I are married now, and today, among various other opportunities for celebration, there will be our wedding party too. I am glad that my beloved sister Antonia can be my bridesmaid, besides Amanda, Pieter's fiancee whom you'll meet a bit later."

This would make Antonia's lover feel lonely and strange… if Cass wouldn't accept him among his men.

"Cass and Pieter, meet Monsieur Thierry Vounos. He is a master gunner too, so I am sure you will find subjects of discussion," she said casually.

She needn't introduce Antonia to them, since they had met her in February. Only her sister's lover was new here.
