Happy seventh anniversary

Before the Mast!

Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?

Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.

We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Henri, who had been acquainted with Captain Stewart and his lieutenants, followed with interest the raking of the other pirate ship, until he had to pay attention to their own "Le Phenix" not to become a phenix on fire, because the revival wouldn't have been granted in these circumstances. Fortunately the sailors seemed to be doing well in not allowing the fire to spread too much.

The consequences of the pirates' fire arrows were heard soon, as the thunder of the double explosion made even the French ship shake, due to the commotion.

"Captain, should we send a boat to seek for any survivors?" Henri asked. "Our allies to be saved, and the pirates to be hanged."

He desperately hoped some of the English officers to be still alive, somewhere in the water.

DAVID JOHNSON, Captain of the “Devil’s Fortune”

When the English navy ship went down with his consort ship, Johnson, like many others, felt conflicted. He did not really miss late O’Connor, even while his death did make him feel a moment of sadness. Shay had been one of the closest persons to him, some of his proper “friends”, which were no that many.

But, pirating was business for Johnson, and a harsh business at that. He was not known as the “Devil” for no reason. The other man had failed today, the loss of the Rising Sun was O’Connor’s ship’s fault. Johnson would have taken the command away from the man anyway and punished him in some way, so the darker part of the “Devil’s” twisted mind felt that O’Connor got just what he deserved.

But he had lost a good ship! This was not something to celebrate, even while the loss of the British navy ship was something to cheer for. David Johnson decided not to cheer or cry, he decided to face the remaining French. They might survive this after all. “Good riddance to those king’s blood dogs! The focus on the frog ship now, men! This is a doomsday for them, and by God we shall see fire and brimstone before this is done!”

He commanded the gunners and archers more casually, but in his usual style, “You have done well this far, men. But, be careful not to scorch our own vessel, damn it!” He thought some of the men seemed a bit careless.

He then waked towards Sol and most of the man’s pirates. He spoke, sounding sincere, “I might have encountered these damned navies in some other trip, so I am glad you are here to reinforce my men…” He then glanced around and made sure that many of his own crewmen could not hear, “My boys are good fighters, but they lack brain! The arrows were a good idea, they might even save us.”

Then, the French navy ship fired at them again, his time inflicting at least slight hull damage. Johnson just began to doubt his earlier positive assessments.
