Join the most epic naval battle!

Make your mark upon our West Indies saga in "Doomsday"!

Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?

Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.

We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Place: Basse Terre, Tortuga, in the inn "Elixir d'Armagnac"

- Continued from here -

It was mid-morning when the ship left them in Tortuga. They had succeeded to sleep for most of the voyage, nestled in each other’s arms, somewhere on the deck, as it was better than in the cramped space below. They didn’t look too tired when they set foot on the cobble streets of Basse Terre. Leftheris was as presentable as any warrant officer on shore leave could have been, and he was too biased to see Mora as anything else than the beauty he had been taken with.

He had expected, childishly, that a nest of sin and debauchery should look the part, flashing its decadence to the "innocent" visitors, but he found a town much like others - obviously smaller than Port de Paix, but not unlike some little towns on the shores of the Mediterranean in France or Spain.

The same combustible heap of contiguous houses which, in case of a severe thunderstorm or another fire-related accident could lead to whole neighbourhoods burning, were lined like beads on the string of winding roads. Only rarely squares, fountains and a church interrupted the necklace. The mix of architectural styles could be noticed even by people like him, who weren't knowledgeable in the field. But, one thing after the other, the town had its appeal.

The fact that it was a pirate stronghold wasn't shown openly at this hour of the morning. Maybe the night life would show it differently, he mused. He was curious to meet Mora's sister, as he had heard about her from Mora and from the children. And he was decided to ask her about the two pirates he knew - Andrea and Gaspard.

Place: Port de Paix, Saint Domingue, Hispaniola, on the shore

- continued from here -

As Babkak was playing for his friend, Leftheris danced next to the fire, eyes shut and body swaying, letting his mind fly away, while the intricate footsteps, twists and jumps attracted other people around to admire him. It was not the big bonfire the people were still gathered around, dancing something else upon the tunes of the band paid specially for this; people had lighted smaller ones a little farther on the shore too. He knew there were fires at the main crossroads in the popular neighbourhoods, and also in villages, because Saint John was blessing with his fires all the places. With one of the jumps, Leftheris landed the other side of the fire, then back, and again, complying with the three traditional jumps over the fire, for good health and good fortune.

People have come to look at this man's exotic dance on an exotic tune. Mora, Iseult, Carlin and Maire were looking from a side too.

"Come on, look at my moves and let yourself carried by the music," he encouraged Carlin, who joined him with tentative steps.

Both Leftheris and Babkak shouted appreciatively at the young boy, who was happy to do what his mother usually forbid him to, and proud to be considered worthy by Leftheris to dance with him, a strange, beautiful dance from his homeland.

Leftheris found the dance freeing; after a while, when catching its gist, Carlin felt the same. Then, to their greatest wonder, Maire joined them by her own initiative, her tiny legs offering a different kind of pirouettes, but trying to imitate her brother and the man in their life. Iseult tried to catch her back, but Leftheris nodded negatively, to let her dance. It was in the family; no harm that she wanted to be included with her brother.

"Can you help me over the fire? I want good luck too," Carlin asked.

"A bit later, when the fire gets smaller," Leftheris replied, making sure both children were dancing farther from the fire.

From his observation place where he played the lute, Babkak admitted that the young boy had the grace, balance, creativity, rhythm and flexibility needed by a zeibekiko.

"With such a good teacher, you'll become a great dancer soon," the luthenist praised the boy when the dance ended.

Place: Port de Paix, Saint Domingue, Hispaniola -
in the inn "The Rose and the Anchor".

Leftheris was happy. Almost one month had passed since he was officially Mora's business partner as well, having put to good use the funds he had been advised to recover from the bank before the financial troubles grew. In the meanwhile, the building received a fresh paint, on the inside and outside equally, and some other upgrading and arrangements. New benches and tables were bought and fixed in the main hall and the private parties room. The inn's sign, a rose on an anchor, with the name written around for those who could read, was proudly displayed outside, and a fresh scent of wild flowers and fresh food welcomed the customers.

The inn "La Rose et l'Ancre" was officially opened today, with a priest blessing it (and blessing the wine, too, with the joke that here wasn't the Cana of Gallillee, and a wink which got clearly understood that they needed to donate a small keg for the Holy Communion). No problem, it was a small sacrifice for the prosperity of the inn.

Leftheris wondered if the money they had paid to the town crier to announce the opening of the new inn and "the first glass of wine on the house today" would be recovered from the profit of the first week. For now, the guild's representatives came for a first meal here too, convincing themselves that everything was all right - and so did, at Leftheris' invitation, a few of the warrant and petty officers of "Le Phenix".

While they had been here, he had kept them company, as he was into funding the venture, but not into actually contributing to its running. Now, that they had left, he moved to a small table in the corner, which allowed him a full overview on the room and, through the window, to what was happening outside as well. A backgammon table was laying on the corner of the table, clearly more lonely than its owner.

Place: Kingston, Jamaica, the fair grounds

- continued from here -

It was always nice to meet crewmates in this crowd which was speaking all the Babel tower's languages... Leftheris smiled widely at seeing the lieutenant, whom he had befriended ever since the damn mutiny attempt.

"Good afternoon, Monsieur Bauldry. I am glad to see you. I happen to be alone after having lost Adrien in the crowd…"

He couldn't say directly that the main problem was Leftheris' own lack of English language which made him more lost here. He had a good time with the privateers too, after losing Adrien, but when they stopped in a tavern, wanting to drink one the other under the table, he had more mind than do it in a foreign town and wake up in jail for having brawled, making shame to his captain. This simply wouldn't have been acceptable.

The question about weapons in time of peace made him grin wider.

"I am not searching for weapons; just looking at the most beautiful ones. No. I won't buy any. Mine are good, and they were earned in a sort of interesting expedition. If you are interested in strange stories, this might make the subject of a discussion around a jug of May punch, later."

It was nothing dishonest in having been employed, during his free time on an extended shore leave, for a private purpose, still in the defence of women and of the lawful owner of the estate.

"But for now, what have you seen and what would you want to see further?" he asked the lieutenant. "I watched some strange, but very skilled dancers, the fighting competitions and displays of human strength, the jugglers, fire eaters, rope walkers..."

Right then, a little child, about Carlin's age, bumped into him.

Place: Aboard ”Le Phenix”, sailing from Port de Paix to New Orleans –
in the master gunner’s cabin

- continued from here -

The chase of the villains had finished. The master gunner and the sailing master had nothing more to do for now, that the ship was laying in the moonlight, stuck on the rocks. Or, more correctly, on a floating island flimsier than a rock, but still solid enough to make them run aground.

Some of the attackers had been caught, and the superior officers had expressed their wish to interrogate them. This was logical to happen, but it was nothing the two warrant officers were involved in. So, a glass of anisette was the best choice for settling the fight rush and allowing sleep to come later.

As the young sailing master agreed to share a drink with him, they descended to Leftheris’ cabin. The young man seemed to have missed a part of the events, asking him if it was a ruse.

”It surely was, I heard a sailor shouting that it was a trick, then the raft men brought their floating device to that land strip, and our sailors went after them. It seems only one of those two were caught,” he explained.

Once arrived in the cabin, he looked for the bottle of anisette, already half drunk a few hours ago by several officers, and for two glasses.

”For a safe arrival to Nouvelle Orleans!” he toasted first, as this was what mattered the most now.
