Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?
Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.
We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Place: Basse Terre, Tortuga, in the inn "Elixir d'Armagnac"

Carmen was usually heading early in the morning to the market, immediately after Pierrot’s arrival and the shop opening. So she had time to cook, while being available during the day if there were several customers in the shop, which sometimes happened. This meant also stopping for a morning coffee with Maribel and the few other early-risers of the inn.
This morning, she left Baptiste sleeping, as he had so few opportunities for sleeping in, and she headed to the ”Elixir d’Armagnac”
, curious to meet her new helper. Ultimately, Baptiste had succeeded to persuade her
that she had no reason to be jealous and that she would actually need more help in a few months’ time, when she will be heavy with child or laying in confinement, besides getting the older sister she had always wanted
He had told her also all the reasons why he had spoken to Nona and no other of the brought women; besides being the only Spanish-speaking one and accustomed to housework, Nona had been his accomplice in getting rid of the danger
that Carmen and the other coloured women of Tortuga might be kidnapped ever again. This made them to have something more in common, she thought.
An appeal to her Christian values helped as well. Once the idea that her husband had found a prettier and lighter-skinned woman to love and to replace her with had been dismissed, it didn’t take long to Carmen to understand that these four women, freed former slaves, were in a difficult situation, with nowhere to go, and offering them shelter and work meant making sure they didn’t end in a brothel against their wish. So, she was eager now to meet her new companion.
On her way, she met Honey, heading towards the same direction. Honey was the one who approached her:”Hello! I heard from Sol and Jean-Pierre that Baptiste got you a new helper. What do you think about it?”
Carmen smiled.”I heard Angel did the same. And I think it is good both for her and for me, because I’ll need the help more in the upcoming months. For you too, not to be alone anymore. Besides, let’s be serious, I can’t keep Baptiste tied to my apron. If he really wanted another woman, he needn’t bring her in our house in order to sleep with her. He could have done it anyway, as we know that many men do it. By having her under my eyes it would be even more difficult than otherwise. Not that it is Baptiste’s case… He is not a cheater.”
Indeed, he wasn’t and she normally trusted him. But a high insecurity, exacerbated by the pregnancy moods, had made her, yesterday, madly jealous. Fortunately, the storm was over and she was again her reasonable self. ”My thoughts weren’t far from yours,”
Honey confessed. ”Especially that my husband isn’t here, he went to Kingston with Chago, to see his sister. Sol passed by last evening to announce me, and to tell me about the new helper. First I asked Sol why would Angel do it, then what that woman had which I didn’t, and he was sincere telling me that nobody wanted to know me alone anymore, and that she has gardening knowledge that I haven’t. So I want to meet her.”
They opened the door of the inn together.

Easter was near; it was in less than one week. Carmen knew that soon Baptiste and all pirates would be back. She hoped it happened in due time for Easter, but even if he didn’t, there would be a late celebration for them two, a week or two later, whenever possible. Anyway, she wanted to prepare him a surprise festive dinner with that opportunity. One evening, after closing the shop, she went to the inn ”Elixir d’Armagnac”
and she asked Cathy about French specialties.”Please teach me what to make for Easter – or if they don’t return yet, for whenever afterwards they return. You know I can cook, but mostly the simple things I learnt at home.”
She had a piece of paper and a pencil, ready to take the needed notes. The kitchen didn’t seem as inviting as other times, and she sought a glass of water.

Place: Basse Terre, Tortuga, in the inn “Elixir d’Armagnac”

Carmen, accompanied by Pierrot and Cecito, entered the inn where she had lived and worked before having her own home and shop. Bardot was already in the stable, eating some hay, and the cart was also securely put in its place. Carmen was tidy and showed her appreciation for Maribel’s help also by putting everything how she had found them.
It wasn’t the first time that, if really busy all the day and without time to cook, she preferred to eat the food Cathy, Pierrot’s mother, prepared for the customers and the workers of the inn. Her choice was to be treated like the worker she used to be, more than like a customer, because cheaper food was still tasty and filling.
The inn wasn’t as crowded, since the crew of the “Rising Sun” had weighed anchors yesterday. But Chago and his crewmen were there, eating, and so did some other pirates and smugglers. Don Luca was also there, playing cards, and Carmen decided not to importune him. She approached the counter and said:”Thank you, Maribel, for the mule and the cart. They are back well, and they had helped me a lot. I think when Baptiste returns, I’ll ask him to use his share for buying a cart and a mule for the shop’s supplying too. For now, meet my new friend, Cecito. He’ll stay with me until Baptiste returns, and then he’ll recommend Cecito to Captain Sol to take him as a ship boy.”
Looking at Cecito, she finalised the introductions:”Cecito, meet Maribel, the owner of this inn and my first friend on the island. Her man is the Rising Sun’s master gunner,”

Carmen was impressed by Jian’s fighting techniques and by the offer of teaching both Monica and her. It was good knowing something like this for a future shop owner in Tortuga – sometimes, pirates or robbers could get rowdy. She would feel more secure if she knew how to ripost, instead of relying only on the survival instinct.
She looked forward to see Baptiste again and, as Jian had advised her, ask for his permission to learn how to fight.
As they were getting their home ready to move in, during the day she had been busy with cleaning, but in the evenings she was still serving to help Maribel (and avoid cooking for now). Once fully moved home, she would cook for Baptiste. He had eaten meals cooked by her back in Matanzas and he had liked it; it wasn’t laziness now, only a good way to use the free time.
When he returned from the work aboard the ship, she brought him something to eat, asking as usual ”How was your day?”

Place: Basse Terre, Tortuga, "Rising Sun" Chandler's shop
was not ready yet to be opened, but the Lafonts were ready to move in their new home upstairs. And they chose the day after looking in the church calendar, because Saint Anthony would also watch on their home. It was a good choice, since for an earlier date the home wasn't yet ready for the move, and for later... why waiting anymore? Besides, the "Rising Sun
" crew would likely weigh anchor and leave to another expedition, and who knew when they would be back? The housewarming party got arranged to happen so as everybody could be around.
If the shop halls at the ground floor were clean but partially empty, only the bigger things being delivered and in place, the kitchen was fully functional and the rooms at the first floor were somehow furnished, albeit simply. The fireplaces and chimneys were working. And what would two spouses need, in order to move and live in their new home, except a bed, a table, some chairs and a wardrobe? Everything else will come in time.
They didn't need much help in order to move their trunks accomodated before by the small room in the inn. They had borrowed Maribel's supply cart for some other things, when buying them.
Now, it was time to hold a party for all those who had helped them. And Maribel had helped Carmen organise one. Otherwise, she wouldn't have known where to start.
