Join the most epic naval battle!

Make your mark upon our West Indies saga in "Doomsday"!

Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?

Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.

We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Date: 17-th of January, 1720
Place: Aboard "HMS Sovereign", Port-de-Paix, Hispaniola

It had been a quiet day that was simmering down into a silent evening and Ansel had finally finished for the day, stocking, organizing and reorganizing his supplies in the ship's sickbay. Somehow he could never seem to rearrange things to his liking, the cupboards just weren't the proper size to fit just so and something always seemed amiss. For now, however, he let it be and everything was tidy enough for him to sleep. Disorganization kept him awake at night, which he found rather odd, given he had spent years scrambling through the blood and filth of chaotic battlefields. With a slight smirk, he closed the last cupboard door and thought that perhaps he was getting too particular in his old age.

He was getting older, the Prussian could feel it in his bones. He didn't have quite the stamina he had as a young lad doing drills day in and day out back home in the Army, but he liked to think he now had a better idea of how to use what strength he had. That wasn't to say he was weak, far from it, he was still fully capable of lifting a grown man up without much trouble and could brawl with the best of 'em. Ansel found himself without the patience for such things anymore, and he was reminded of it daily when he found himself more comfortable in keeping to himself than fraternizing with the young British nobles he had found himself sailing with.

Just at that thought he heard a pair of footsteps outside his door and turned to glance up at the newcomer. It was unusual for someone to find themselves in his sickbay on a good day and especially while in port. If the men thought they could come down to hang about because of boredom, well he'd have to set that straight fairly quickly. He didn't like company, though he hadn't been aboard long enough to cement his lingering reputation.

"If you're not bleeding out or in danger of losing a limb I suggest you go sleep off your trouble," he said gruffly, still tidying up with his back to the door. "I don't treat hangovers or petty sicknesses."

Ansel Konrad

Name: Ansel Konrad

Aliases: N/A

Age and birthday: 44- Born June 13,1676

Gender: Male

Rank/ Occupation: Doctor/ Surgeon

Current Location: Port-de-Paix

Character PB: Graham McTavish

General appearance: Ansel is well-built, strong enough to carry a man (or two) off a battlefield. He has no hair, though whether it is shaved regularly or simply balding is unknown, though he makes up for it with the persistent shadow of facial hair about his face. It’s long since grayed but he can occasionally be seen sporting a beard, moustache or both, though typically he likes to keep it short. What he lacks in height as he is only average he makes up for in physical strength and the width of his arms and shoulders. In short, he takes excellent care of himself and is in better shape than many men half his age.

Clothing: Always a stickler for order, he is always dressed in neat, clean clothes that consist of uniform breeches and stockings, though he prefers not to wear his coat while working for fear of dirtying it with blood or other filth. When it comes to anything ceremonious, however, he prides himself on being as well-dressed as physically possible. While on shore leave, Ansel has a few shirts he keeps neat and are all a bright shade of blue he has a distinct taste for.

Personality: Ansel displays the type of hardened attitude and self-discipline one would expect of a man from the Iron Kingdom. While stern, and very rarely seen to crack a smile he cares deeply for those close to him and the closest thing to affection he displays is a nod or a look of respect, and those are few and far between for it takes a significant deed to truly impress the old Prussian. He grew up in a noble household and therefore has a high expectation of himself and those he works alongside, in demeanor, etiquette, and dress.

He craves order and is constantly seen arranging and rearranging his supplies, cleaning instruments until they shine and keeping his workspace spotless. With those who don’t know him well enough, Ansel is an intimidating presence and has been known to be the subject of mysterious rumours that he never bothers to quell as he somewhat enjoys the ambiguity. Men have been terrified to seek treatment from him but he has never been rude or unnecessarily mean to a man in pain and has killed more than a few out of mercy.

Birth place: Bielefield, Westphalia, Brandenburg-Prussia

Father – Frederik Konrad [deceased]
Mother – Cathrin Konrad [deceased]
siblings – Gertrud Konrad, Frederik II Konrad, Wilhelm Konrad [deceased], Frauke Konrad
spouse, children, anybody else –Emma Konrad (wife) [deceased], Liesel Konrad (daughter)

History: Born the fourth child of a wealthy noble junker family, Ansel grew up in the shadows of his elder brothers and from a young age he learned to act much older than he was. Where both of his brothers were fine fighters, Ansel was decent but it never seemed to come as easily to him. He grew up quickly, excelling in his lessons and soon joined his brothers in the Prussian army given that service was mandatory. His eldest brother Frederik did his service then returned home when he inherited the estate after their father’s death. Wilhelm stayed on with Ansel, though he was certainly a finer fighter, had been serving longer and was eventually promoted and the two were separated.

The time he spent in the military was not wasted, though the punishments were severe and the lifestyle was far from comfortable. Ansel considered this as simply paying his dues and was proud to serve such a formidable country, taking great pride in the Prussian blue he wore. He learned quickly to pull his own weight and how to avoid incurring the wrath of the higher ups. In 1701, the resident doctor’s assistant died unexpectedly and a new one was required immediately as they were already on the march to fight the War of Spanish Succession. Being only 25 and seeing a way out of the harsh life as a soldier he quickly proved himself more than capable in the medical field.

As the war raged on, he ended up assisting some allied English troops during a particularly brutal battle after their own doctor was killed, and picked up a few phrases in the language. He spent the next 12 years stitching up fallen soldiers on the battlefield, Prussian, English and Dutch alike as some situations he found himself the closest person with proper training in dealing with the kinds of wounds that couldn’t wait. In 1713 he was injured with a sword slash to one of his legs and nearly bled to death, but by the time he had sufficiently recovered and was ready to return to duty the war had already ended and he made his way home to find Wilhelm had been killed.

Within the next year he was married and had a daughter, taking up a medical practice with the thought of settling down. His wife died suddenly not long after giving birth due to a sudden sickness that claimed Ansel’s mother as well. He felt a certain sense of shame that he couldn’t prevent it and sought out to go back to work healing injuries rather than simple sickness, and as much as he hated to admit it, he missed the structured life of the army and the bloody chaos of war. So he left his daughter Liesel to be raised by his brother Frederik with the promise that he would return someday and set off for England, having heard of their dispute with the Spanish. He enlisted as a Navy surgeon, his knowledge of English coming back fairly quickly, and was soon aboard the HMS Squirrel headed for the Caribbean. He had never sailed before and spent nearly the entire time being sick over the side. He eventually grew accustomed to the motion but when it was sunk during the blockade, he was fished out with Dennis Appleby by the Sovereign and took up the position of Surgeon once again.

Weapon Skills: Ansel is formally trained with swords and firearms and is quite capable of using either in a difficult situation. He is incredibly proficient with small knives as well and knows just where to hit to end a man’s life quickly.

Anything else: He has a large scar on his thigh from where he was nearly killed and a slight limp in his walk due to this. His limp is nearly unnoticeable as he has worked hard to keep himself strong and the thought of being considered a cripple makes him physically ill.
