Happy seventh anniversary

Before the Mast!

Peace with Spain was signed in February 1720. In late April its news arrived to the West Indies, so all the Navies got allied against the common foe – pirates, making their trade more difficult to survive. Which side are you on?

Be ye a pirate, a naval officer, a slave or a lady, you will find a place aboard one of our four ships or live on a paradise island. Men aboard any ship are strongly recommended as first characters, and civilians as secondary ones. No more female sailors are allowed.

We are not the usual sandboxy RPG, neither a narrative-driven one, but a story-focused writing community where each actively writing character can make a difference and an impact on the overall plot. We are writing collaboratively a coherent story with many sideplots aside of it. We also have guides to help you with the time setting, and are more influenced by historical events rather than following them by the history books!

Doomsday, where four ships get sunk

Sebastien's words made sense:

"I'll tell her. And if you find him, don't let him return anymore to the Navy. May God, all the saints and the mermaids take care of us!"

There was nobody else than the spiritual helpers to invoke, because on the material realm, hell had descended on the sea, directly among and over the two battling ships. Following the raking fire, the French cannonade riposted, tearing a hole in the pirate ship hull and making some bodies spectacularly flow into the air. Andrea refused to think further, who aimed it so well, because he knew that either answer would have been equally painful.

It was the end of the "Devil's Fortune", and everybody aboard who hadn't been already quartered by the cannonade, nor blown away by the shock, knew it. After Sebastien jumped into the sea, Andrea looked at little Jean-Pierre and, hand in hand, they jumped too, trying to get as far away as possible from the French flagship. It felt like deja vu, just that in the last moments of the "Caribbean Siren" there was another sworn little brother to take care of.

The water was cold and uninviting, and debris from the past cannonades was still floating around. Andrea and Jean-Pierre found a piece of wood and started paddling.

Whatever else he could do to help his own people had been done. Either he would die free in the Devil's Fortune, or he could choose to flee and hide from the authorities be they French or British. What a nice choice that would be! Sadly that was not the case for Thanos and everyone else as the ship had already lost its own war against a superior enemy, but not before spilling out the guts of the French ship...

"What now Greco?" Pedro asked Thanos looking around the chaos.

"What else buddy?!? Same here as Andrikos and everyone else! We jump to the sea for a watery grave instead of steel. And if they catch us, we fight to the death. Good idea?"

"Good enough for crazy people! Let's go" Pedro replied as he followed the man from the Greek seas into the blue abyss with the cannonballs still being fired upon the body of the ship.

Baptiste shot Cass a quick grin at his promise. Thanks. I owe you one, when we get out of here.his eyes said. When, not if. He had to focus on the hope that thought brought to him.

But then, watching his friends jump, he felt bad for them, and he couldn't do any more than try to give the enemy a good shot or two with the gun he was still manning! All in all, he thought they weren't doing badly at that for a ship that was sinking. But even so, he prayed that when it was his and Cass' turn to jump, they wouldn't catch fevers. Carmen had cured him once. Could she do so again?

"If possible, we should try to spot the wood first," he reasoned. "Who knows how many pieces will be big enough?" Their own rakings and attempted explosions at the hands of the other ships could affect that. "I'll be ready to go any minute!"

They have given everything they could. The French flagship, hit by cannonades – raking fire included – and the target of everyone’s curses, wasn’t doing well either. But the Devil’s last ship was sinking, and they had to choose their own moment for jumping into the ocean, before they got thrown unexpectedly, in a worse situation.

Cass returned the grin and nodded. Of course the carpenter should be right… but what else was to be done? Barrels, pieces of mast, yard or hull, anything of these would do.

He jumped into the unwelcoming water, taking the same piece of wood like Baptiste, and they still looked one at the other… Did it matter anymore that once upon a time, rather a lifetime ago (or merely a little more than one year ago) they were rivals for the love of the same woman? Now each of them was happily married and becoming a father in a way or another. Their families back in Tortuga needed them.

Cass wasn’t yet too keen of the baby Maribel had adopted, but he didn’t see this badly either. He was just his usual, apathetic self. It was mostly, as Maribel had told him, the fact that a father would bond with the child starting from the toddler age, and that now, as a helpless infant, he was confined to the main caregiver’s attention. In this case, not even Maribel, but Juliette, the nurse. And if Maribel visited Juliette daily, to actually help her, and she enjoyed it, he was merely glad for her. He agreed, however, that a child needed both a mother and a father in his life. And Cass was determined to fight death in order to return home, to his family. He wanted the same for Baptiste.

Did it matter what they wanted for their future, though? It mattered only what the fate had in stock for them… They had started paddling, in the opposite direction from the Navy ship, trying to avoid the debris in their path. They couldn’t avoid, however, the boats the Navy sailors were manning, and their fishing nets used, now, to fish other kind of sea trophies. Caught in such a net, they had to submit to their destiny. From the pot, into the frying pan…

DAVID JOHNSON, Captain of the “Devil’s Fortune”

Captain Johnson had no more commands. He knew that all knew that now it was every man for himself. His captaincy has ended, there was no ship to command, only a wooden hulk. He cursed the Frenchmen to himself. A man could not be more bitter.

The ship started really to pitch towards the side where most holes were. Johnson had to take support from ropes. Now it was his time to jump and leave his ship. Most others had already jumped overboard. Johnson was among the last, while not the last one, to jump off the sinking vessel.

Johnson was not going to give up. He found a floating barrel to help him float. He was a bad and lazy swimmer, but at least he could float well enough.

He felt thankful for a brief moment when it seemed that the French finally did not fire at them at all. But, he knew, they would soon return to catch prisoners. He cursed to himself again.
